What are the rules regarding safety of OB dumps?
Dump shall be formed on stable ground if floor is slippery,it shall be roughed up by blasting or ripping to a depth of 1-1.5m.Soft material like soil shall not be dumped at the fllor.Slope of OB dump shall be determined by natural angle of repose of material being deposited but it shall not exceed 37.5°from the horizontal.Dump face shall not be retained by artificial means at an angle in excess of its natural angle of repose.Dump height should be designed on scientific basis.If dump height is more than 30m,it shall be benched and the bench height shall not exceed 30m.Toe of the dump shall not be permitted to approach railway or road public works or building closer than a distance equal to height of the dump.A fence shall be erected around the advancing toe of the dump at a distance not less than height of the dump to prevent person approaching the dump.Water shall not be allowed to accumulate in or around the OB dump.Dumps shall be inspected in every shift. Special care shall be taken during and after heavy rains.Dump shall not be formed directly below and near an over head line. Precautions during dumping Dumping area shall be provided with a berm of height 1m or half the dumper wheel dia.Non dumping area or unstable area shall be demarcated by dumping material to a height of 2m.Dumping shall be stopped if there are cracks/signs of instability.
